Portuguese Wine Regions
The greatest wine
region in Portugal is the Upper Douro
Valley where the great Port wines are
grown and vinified. In the delta
cities of Oporto and Villa Nova de Gaia,
ports are aged until they are shipped
to markets around the world. The
major port grapes are Touriga Nacional,
Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta
Barroca, Tinta Cão and Malvasia
(for white port).
The major dry red
wine regions are Alentejo, Dão
and the Douro. There is a charming,
light petilant dry white wine called
Vinho Verde produced in the northern
coastal regions.
