“We’re grilling up some burgers, what red wine would you serve?” more often than not our answer is, “Cotes du Rhone”
“I’m making sausage sandwiches, which wine should I get?” and once again our answer is, “Cotes du Rhone”
There are very few wines that are quite as versatile and food friendly as the Grenache based wines from France’s Southern Rhone. Now there has been a movement in the past few years, a push towards riper extraction, richer fruit and heavier oak, a movement that has had us dropping some of our old standbys and seeking out the more traditional, less Australian tasting wines that made us fall in love with the Rhone to begin with. One deep sniff of this Yves Cheron Cotes du Rhone and we were in love all over again.
The estate is located in Gigondas but the fruit for this wine is purchased from trusted growers in Violes, Sarrians and Seguret with Yves Cheron overseeing the vineyards and deciding when to harvest as to ensure the quality and standard he demands for any wine that wears his label. The result is this elegantly structured, Grenache heavy, super value wine that is insanely easy to drink. Loaded with dark berry fruit and black pepper, big flavor and that lovely little wild thing we so adore about these wines. The finish is fresh and inviting and with just enough grip to hold up to a wide array of summer foods.
