If you haven't yet discovered just how good the fruit is in this Wine Country favorite, consider this: Tim Mondavi was so taken with the vineyard, he bought the property and is currently building the winery for his ultra-premium Continuum project there. In the meantime there are perhaps two more vintages of Cloud View from this vineyard, then the label will produce wines from other sites. Winemaker Karen Turjanis knos this vineyard well. Each succeeding vintage she has produced profound red wine, and this vintage may be her finest yet. The darkly colored wine possesses a firm structure, with a full-bodied, balanced flavor of earthy black fruits. This version is 48% Merlot and 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is as good as anything made in California today.

It is pretty easy to like this wine. There is concentration, intensity and ripeness. Dark fruits�blackberry and plum�dominate, but there are hints of spices and herbs to go along with bold tannins. The final blend is 67% Cabernet and 33% Merlot and it was aged for 23 months in French oak barrels. The fruit is Estate grown on Pritchard Hill, which is located within the Vaca Mountains on the east side of Napa Valley, above Oakville, at 1000 - 1500 ft. elevation.
