The 2001 vintage in Napa is generally regarded as the greatest vintage for cabernet so far in this young century, but with most top wineries now releasing their 2004’s and 2005’s, most of the wines from the 2001 vintage disappeared from the marketplace a long time ago. So when we were offered a couple of cases of this late-released 2001 from the small but highly regarded Macauley Vineyard, we jumped at the chance. All of the power, depth and balance of this great vintage is on display in this outstanding cabernet, which is now showing the first hints of maturity. With a nose reminiscent of a top Bordeaux, the wine features the deep berry and cassis fruit typical of a top-notch cabernet, with that extra helping of complexity and depth that heralds a great vintage. This is drinking beautifully right now but should continue to develop for several years—if you can keep your hands and corkscrew off of it! Limited—only 2 cases available.
