8 years old from Ukiah, Mendocino County High in the hill country to the west of Ukiah on an isolated patch of ranch land a few buildings house an unlikely alambic Cognac still and stands of oak barrels quietly aging. Germain-Robin makes the greatest brandy in America, and in blind tastings with leading Cognacs, many experts prefer the richness of its California fruit to the leaner French brandies of the classic region. I recently sampled the Shareholder's Reserve, the estate's 8 year old brandy, and found it sweet, rich and delicious.
