This is the new vintage of Catena Alta Malbec, one of the top Malbecs coming out of Mendoza. The 2004 was a Top 100 Wine per Wine Spectator in 2007, the second vintage in a row to have this honor. This wine is made from a strict selection of the best parcels of Catena's top vineyard sites, which is then further selected so that only the highest quality is achieved. Catena Alta is a much more structured and ageworthy wine, with even deeper fruit and more intense flavors. Here the color goes from deep violet to almost black, and the deep fruit is enhanced by complex Asian spice, cedar and a hint of leather, and a pure minerality that contributes to the sensation of purity and balance. I can't think of many domestic cabernets selling for $50 that offer this combination of depth, complexity, and the potential to develop. Simply outstanding.
