How does one put into words a wine that throws you into gaping disbelief about a whole category of wine? This latest release of their library selection, called Vinothek, which means “specialty wine store,” has spent 15 years in old Austrian oak cask, and was just bottled earlier this year. The nose is complex and enticing, changing as the evening goes on. On the palate, the wine explodes and fills the mouth with rich, developed character, layers of flavors that include roasted hazelnuts, marzipan, smoke, a touch of delicious savoriness, all in a light and filigree frame of 12% alcohol. A masterpiece. It is my Wine of the Year, a testament to finding amazing, stunning, beyond-words aged wine in a place I least expected. “It’s a novel, this wine, not a bon mot; not even a scene but an entire delicate story not barely finished being told. Yes it’s great wine—or “great wine”—but it is great that this wine exists.” —Terry Theise 100% certified biodynamic
