A. A. Badenhorst 2017 Chenin Blanc "The Golden Slopes", South Africa
The name Golden slopes comes from the vineyard being planted high on the Paardeberg mountain and the steep terraces and the fact that right before harvest the hillside turns a lovely golden color. The vineyard was planted in the 1970s and they still do things the same way when it comes to vitification. The vineyard yields about 2 tons and the grapes are pressed and run off into older casks for fermentation and aging. The juice is then put into 1200 foudres for the fermentation and maturation of 15 months. Only 1600 bottles of this wine are produced and is some of the best Chenin Blanc coming out of South Africa. This wine has amazing mouth feel with great texture and freshness. It has a lovely bouquet of Japanese Yuzu, quince, lemon, lemongrass, and thyme with a lovely acidity. Pair with roasted chicken, pork, pastas in cream sauces, root vegetable dishes.
