An unusual find, this wine is from a grape, rarely found in Spain called Merenzao here, and Trousseau in France. It is reminiscent of a great, finessed Burgundy. Red berry fruits layered with spice and herbs and hints of tea leaves. Only 187 cases prod
The Algueira Winery is located in the midst of old oak and chestnut tree forests on the banks of the Sil River in northwestern Spain - the word Algueira means chestnut tree. It is both a grower of grapes and producer, and work naturally in the vineyard - no tilling of the soil, use cover crops and various composts to main soil health and prevent erosion.
One of their many projects has been to recover many local, now rare, varieties. For example, they produce very small quantities of this gorgeous 100% Merenzao (Trousseau) wine which is light to medium bodied but aromatic and complex. It reminds me of a great, finessed Burgundy. Red berry fruits layered with spice and herbs and hints of tea leaves. Only 187 cases produced.
Pair with beef, lamb, pork, truffle pastas or rice dishes with mushrooms.
