Barruol Lynch 2018 Hermitage "La Pierrelle" Rhone
Hermitage, that historic dome of staked vines overlooking the river at Tain in the northern Rhone Valley, is the world’s greatest terroir for Syrah. It is also one of the world’s most significant, reportedly the birthplace of this great red wine variety. Micro-negociant Louis Barruol of Gigondas (a 14th generation winemaker) and legendary Berkeley importer Kermit Lynch have joined forces to produce this bottling, Barruol doing the vinifying and Lynch blending the selection. The stony La Pierrelle vineyard is near the top of the hill with perfect exposure for its 30-50 year old vines, resulting in a velvety wine, spectacularly rich, opaque, hauntingly perfumed, full-bodied, flavorful and satisfying enough to warrant a smile.
