We were captivated by this crunchy and fresh Loire Valley Cabernet Franc early one August morning and quickly nabbed 20 cases to ensure we could feature it for our Wine of the Month program. Wines this generous and infinitely gulpable tend to fly so we took a stand early!
Christophe Baudry’s family have owned their estate, Domaine De La Perriere in Chinon since 1398 and the Baudry name is revered in the region of Chinon as producers of top-quality wines. Christophe became friends with Jean-Martin Dutour of Domaine De La Roncee, a neighboring family run estate in Chinon and the two decided to join forces. The Baudry-Dutour label was created in 2003 with Christophe handling most of the business end of things and Jean-Martin overseeing vineyard and winemaking management, always with an eye for quality and minimal environmental impact.
This crave-inducing Chinon is named Amaranthe because the gorgeous garnet color is reminiscent of the flowering Amaranth that is found in the vineyard where the 20 year old Cabernet Franc vines for this wine are located. A wonderfully juicy, fresh and energetic dry red wine is packed with floral and crunchy red fruit notes but is still lean enough to welcome a nice little chill and has a flirty little snap on the finish that keeps your palate wanting another sip. Exactly the kind of easy drinking red you want to drink on the back porch or on picnics, much like you would Beaujolais or Dolcetto.--Samantha Dugan
