2017 Wildflower Sauvignon Blanc, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
This beautiful little Sauvignon Blanc is just that. Most Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is all about the bam in your face flavors of grass, grapefruit and lime. This wine has much more of a relaxed flavor profile. The wine itself is full of passion fruit, fresh citrus, and gooseberry. It has a juicy and pure flavor profile with the lingering citrus well after the wine has moved its way down your tongue. The mouthwatering acidity in this wine is the best part; it leaves you constantly wanting another sip.
The Wildflower has some of those awesome classic flavors because it is still a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but what makes it unique, is that it comes from two different vineyards in Hawke’s Bay. One is the Maraekakaho vineyard, which is on ancient shingle terraces vineyard high above the Ngaruroro River. This is one of the most elevated vineyards in Hawke’s Bay. The north facing slopes enjoy long and hot summer days but chill off overnight. The 2nd vineyard is part of the Te Awanga Estate, which is right on the beach and has a maritime climate. Both of these vineyards are the ideal growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc and combining them brings out a kick ass wine.
The winemaker and founder of Te Awanga is Rod McDonald. He arrived in Hawke’s Bay 25 years ago and began his 9-year journey as a winemaker for Vidal Estate and was awarded New Zealand’s Winemaker of the Year award in 2006. He lives his life trying to create wine that brings all of the elements together of what he believes makes great wine; good land, good people and amazing grapes. He gathers all of his resources to have the best of the best and that’s how you get a wine as spectacular as the 2017 Wildflower Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc.
