Giant Steps is taking strides in making sure their wines are produced sustainably. Everything is hand picked and wild fermented with gravity flow and no fining and filtration. Fermentation is done in stainless steel and oak. They use 40% whole bunch and 60% de-stemmed along with French oak mostly used for 8 month. All of these factors leave us with a wine full of red berries such as strawberry, raspberry, cherries and plums with hints of oak spice and a slight earthiness with a soft tannin finish.

Dead Arm is a reference to a disease that can affect vines. This disease leaves half of the vine as deadwood and the other half low yielding but great intensity. Aged in French and old American oak barriques this wine also sees no fining or filtration. This wine displays powerful intensity but an elegance and refinement with a nose of red fruits and savory spice. The palate is long and linear while remaining pure with structured tannins and mouth watering acidity accompanied by layers of blueberry, pomegranate and plums with a strong mineral finish.

Grenache is one of my favorite things wines from Australia. This wine is only made in the best vintages from very low yielding vineyards. This wine is 100% barrel fermented for 12 months in older French Oak Hogsheads. Aromas of red fruits with a hint of rose and savory spice. The palate is medium bodied with an array of cranberry and raspberry fruit with impressive purity and flavor intensity. The acidity and fine tannins are the backbone of this wine.

This is VERY special and rare wine, made from grapes harvested from vines planted in 1847, probably the oldest Shiraz/Syrah vines on earth. It’s hard to explain exactly why this wine is SO special, but it is. It is haunting and magical in a way that just cannot be replicated in younger vine wine. The wine is weighty, yet elegant and smooth, with strong and pure spicy berry and cherry fruit, fine, rich tannins and just a hint of cocoa and vanilla bean from the top-notch oak aging. It has considerable heft and power, but remains very well balanced, with proper natural acidity. The finish is long, subtle and ethereal. And it has that special complexity and depth that only ancient vine fruit can bring. If you’ve never had an ancient vine wine, you owe it to yourself to try one. Ageable for another 3-10 years, it is drinking very well right now with decanting. There were 370 cases made and very few make it to the US each year. We got the last 6-pak available, so don’t delay and miss an opportunity to get this one-of-a-kind wine.

A beautifully balanced, medium to light bodied Pinot Noir with intense fruit and bright acidity always hits my sweet spot when it comes to pairing savory foods like Thanksgiving fare. One of our great new discoveries, the small production Handpicked wines from Australia, all demonstrate the best of the region selected, in this case the cool climate island of Tasmania. This one of those achingly pure and pretty wines with unusual depth and balance that displays a true sense of place or terrior. Ethereal and complex aromas of pretty red fruit, smoke and baking spices leads to intense yet light bodied spicy red cherry fruit, leaning toward the old world in style, with a wonderful depth and penetrating purity. The finish is long and elegant. If you like the lighter bodied Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, you owe it to yourself to try this wine. Worth every penny and more. Medium to light in body, this is a beautifully balanced Pinot Noir. Intense, ripe cherry and strawberry fruits with very bright acidity and great balance. Pair with roast salmon, arctic char, tuna sashimi, veal.

The rarity of this wine is off the charts! Made with grapes from the oldest Grenache vines in the world, with the vines planted in 1848, it is haunting and magical in a way that cannot be replicated in younger vine wine - which in this case means virtually every other wine made. Lithe, pure, intense, subtle, flavorful and complex, this wine is also bright, juicy and fresh. This incredibly limited wine is made by Marco Cirillo in a non-intervention, old school method, with 24 months of aging in big, used French oak. There is enough natural acidity and tannic structure for 10 years or so of aging, at which time the wine should be even more magical. Get this while you can for the wine experience of a lifetime.
