Cabernet Sauvignons of the Southern Hemisphere

Impressive Quality, Affordable Prices from the Cab from Argentina, Chile & Australia

Okay, so hear me out… I want you to enjoy your glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, but I also want you to explore Cabernets from the Southern Hemisphere.  Cabs that are affordable and impressive.  That is one of the amazing things about wines from the Southern Hemisphere; they don’t cost an arm and a leg to get top quality.

Sure, these regions have their high-end wines, but every region does.  The winemakers of the Southern Hemisphere make great everyday drinking wines along with those special occasion wines that make amazing gifts.  As of late, winemakers from all over the world are leaving their respective territories to explore the winegrowing and winemaking opportunities of the Southern Hemisphere.  Wine-producing nations such as Argentina, Chile, and Australia are areas winemakers are exploring to see what the different terroirs can bring to wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that is so widely grown all over the world, of course the southern hemisphere has to have their fair share of the fun.  I will also admit it is hard to find a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Southern Hemisphere that is 100% Cabernet. Commonly in places like Chile and Argentina you will find they blend small percentages of grapes such as Carmenere, Malbec, and Syrah with their Cabernets to create the perfect well-rounded wine.

2014 Zuccardi Q Cabernet Sauvignon, Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

The Q stands for quality and this bottling from Zuccardi should add a V for value. The high altitude vineyards, between 3600 and 4035 feet altitude are some of Zuccardi's finest and the hand-selected grapes see the utmost care. After a minimal intervention fermentation in Zuccardi's state of the art winery, the wine spends 12 months is 25% new French oak, This beautifully balanced wine has big pretty aromas and flavors of dark berry and herbs. It is smooth, powerful and classy, with nice weight in the mouth and smooth, firm tannins on the finish. There is a nice hit of sweet oak and perfect natural acidity to keep things fresh. Overall, a remarkable well made wine for the money.

2016 Susana Balbo Crios Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a big deal coming from Argentina. Susana Blabo decided she didn’t want to just make Malbec so she decided to take her chances with Cabernet Sauvignon. 2014 Los Vascos Grand Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua, Chile

The folks from 1st growth Bordeaux Chateau Lafite Rothschild oversee all elements of production of the Los Vascos wines. This blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Carménère, 5% Syrah and 5% Malbec is estate grown and bottled. Made from up to 80-year-old fruit, after a careful ferment it is aged for 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels. It has great structure and fine dusty tannins to go with the strong Chilean fruit - ripe cherry, pomegranate & prunes -  which is dark and savory but not over extracted or sweet.  The 2014 is more structured and powerful than the 2013. The first-class Lafite oak comes through nicely with some smooth cedar and vanilla overtones and those fine tannins. Elegant, balanced and strong, this wine has the best of both worlds

2013 Handpicked Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia

One of our great new discoveries, the small production Handpicked wines from Australia all demonstrate the best of the region selected, in this case the wild and pristine Margaret River in Western Australia. This is a strong and intense red wine that retains balance and finesse, while being delightfully different than the usual. There are big aromas and flavors of dark blackberry, with a bit of Aussie eucalyptus, cedar and bay leaf, and a nice little dollop of chocolate on the finish. There is proper acidity and good tannic structure, but the tannins are quite fine, meaning this is an easy drinking, bold Cabernet with a smooth and satisfying finish. Like all Handpicked wines, there is excellent purity and depth.
