The Talent Behind Lazarre Wines, Cycles Gladiator & Sea Monster
Adam Lazarre does not do anything small or half-ass.
Based in Paso Robles, this self-taught, brilliant, medical-school-just-turned-out-not-to-be-my-thing kind of guy, is a force of nature. He’s bold, outspoken, and full of personality with a giant grin at the ready, and his wines reflect his sense of adventure. He’s the one other winemakers come to when their wines are sick or things are broken in the cellar.
Adam made the wines for the very popular Hahn Cellars for many years before striking out on his own, and has received numerous accolades and awards for his wines. He is a cornerstone of the Paso Robles wine scene.
Using his chemistry background and his innate artistic senses, he crafts suberb wines in many styles. His Cycles Gladiator, Petite Sirah, Central Coast, $10.99, is big, bold and juicy and was our wildly popular ‘Wine of the Month’ last winter. He’s got our current white wine best seller with his Sea Monster, Central Coast, $13.99, which is a perfectly refreshing summer sipper.
On the more serious side of things, he and his wife, Angie, craft elegant and nuanced wines under their own Lazarre label. These are all small batch, high end wines that are priced well below their worth, and highlights include the Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.
Here is a great introduction to Adam's talent:
2015 Cycles, Gladiator, Petite Sirah, Central Coast, CA
Petite Sirah is something of a misnomer: there is nothing petite about it, and it is distinct in flavor from its’ parent, Syrah. Named for the tiny berries with a high skin to juice ratio, Petite Sirah grapes make a dark, inky-brilliant fuschia wine bursting with bold flavors. Winemaker Adam Lazarre describes this powerhouse ‘Gladiator’ best: “… a particularly dark, brooding wine with aromatics of boysenberry and blueberry tied together with sweet cedar and vanilla notes from the new oak. Plum, blackberry, and other black fruit flavors up front. The tannins are pretty immense but the depth of lush fruit on the midpalate mitigate any perception of astringency. The result is a mouthfilling expression of dark fruits that wrap around the tongue and coat the whole mouth. This is a wine that will stain your soul.” Perfect for winter. Perfect with bacon cheeseburgers, beef tenderloin, and cave-aged gruyere.

2015 Sea Monster, Eclectic White Blend, Central Coast, CA
Adam Lazarre is a veteran respected winemaker up in Paso, and is quite the character, full of wit and adventure, and his wines reflect his spunk! This blend is Viognier and Riesling, with just a touch of Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. These grapes somehow play nice together and deliver a juicy blast of ripe tangerine, peach, and tropical fruits with a zing of bright acidity. Fun and porch-worthy, this white will please any crowd on a warm summer afternoon. This blend also pairs perfectly with Filet of Sole with lemon butter, steamed clams with garlic and white wine, and lobster mac and cheese!

2012 Lazarre, Pinot Noir, Central Coast, CA
Adam Lazarre is a veteran winemaker up in Paso Robles, and is so well regarded amongst his pears, that they will often bring their issues in the cellar to Adam for help. His Pinot Noir is light, elegant, and lacy. A nod to Burgundy shapes his style: pretty strawberry, cranberry and dried pomegranate mix with subtle dried spring bouquet on the nose, and the palate is silky and subtle with Montmorency cherry, pekoe tea, and delicate dried thyme. This is a beauty and pairs with more delicate game bird and poultry dishes. A wine industry favorite and winner at the San Francisco Chronicle Competition!
