2005 Rutherford Cab for $24.99? No, we’re not kidding. Lucky for us, an industry veteran had a secret stash of this absolutely gorgeous old school styled Napa Cab sitting in his cellar. After tasting, we jumped at the chance to share this gem with you.
2005 Xabo Quivre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford, Napa Valley $24.99
How often do we get to taste a wine of such pedigree? And for a ridiculously low price! Rutherford is known the world over for structured and refined Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabs from this prestigious AVA can go for hundreds of dollars, and let’s face it, finding older vintages can be downright impossible. But life happens, and in this case, prime surplus juice from a prime address became available and Lou Bock, longtime vintner and distributor snatched it up and has given us a perfectly regal and classic Cabernet for pennies on the dollar.
This Cab is elegant and showing all the pretty tertiary notes reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux. Restrained alcohol, bright acidity, fine boned tannins and concentrated flavors reflecting the excellent 2005 growing season caused this Cab to age beautifully. Soft and delicate now with dried black currant, black cherry, fall leaves, cedar chest, and worn leather with hints of dried rosemary and mint. A focused beam of acidity, medium body, smooth tannins, and a long, long finish complete the package.
This is an excellent opportunity to taste a piece of history, whether you are a fan of old school Napa Cabernet and Bordeaux already, or curious about the hype, pick one up today. I promise you will be impressed!
