Empanada Fest July 6 Preview with Wines of South America

July 6th from 1-4 pm we will be hosting our 2nd Empanada Fest! We will be serving empanadas from Cesar’s Bistro with some of my favorite wines from Argentina and Chile!

At our upcoming Empanada Fest--the second one we've hosted--there will be a combination of red and white wines from South America.  From Argentina we will be featuring a few of our Malbecs as well as refreshing Torrontes. Chile will provide a few Sauvingon Blancs as well as Carmenere, Syrah and Chardonnay!

I have been on the hunt for more new and exciting things in these regions so I am excited to pour what I have found as well as get to pair them with some great Empanadas!

Here are a few of the wines I will be featuring!

2016 Domaine Bousquet Malbec Reserve

Tupungato Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

100% Organic from vineyards that are 4000 ft. above sea level. This wine is 85% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends 10 months in French Oak then another 4 in the bottle before it is released. Aromas of Blackberry with notes of black currant and plum. On the palate this wine is balanced with a pure fruit expression of raspberry and fig as well as cocoa notes on the structured long finish.

$12.99 per bottle

2016 Catena San Carlos Cabernet Franc, Mendoza, Argnetin

A newer wine, this 100% Cabernet Franc hits it out of the park. Showing the expertise that comes from a 100 year history of growing high altitude grapes and making fine wine, this wine is refined, smooth and delicious. It has bright minerally red fruit aromas and clean, nicely tannic but very smooth dark fruits with a delightful savory herb, dark olive edge - but without that strong green edge some Cab Francs overpower you with. There is very nice natural acidity and very nice texture to go with a pure core and nicely tannic finish. This wine blew me away with its style and quality. And, speaking from personal experience, this wine is perfect with steak.

$16.99 per bottle

2017 Llama Old Vine Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina

The vines for this wine are over 100 years old. The nose on this wine gives off red and dark cherries with hints of violet. The wine is aged for 6 months in French oak barrels and you are left with a wine full of body and a round structure with burst of berry and a finish of toasted oak.

$12.99 per bottle

2016 Colome Torrontes, Salta, Argentina

Unique, intense and floral, Torrontés is the national white grape of Argentina and found almost nowhere else. The best Torrontés is grown in the high  altitude region of Salta. The grapes for this hauntingly beautiful and complex version are grown at 5'500'.  A powerful floral bouquet - white flowers, roses & violets - is followed with mouth-coating, minerally, honeyed tropical fruit and citrus. It has perfectly balancing natural acidity and finishes dry and clean. The intensity, weight and texture of the wine is very sensual. A sumptuous, gorgeous hand-made wine, it sees no oak and is famously food-friendly. A must try if you

$13.99 per bottle

2017 Abras Torrontes, Salta, Argentina

This wine is modern and typical at the same time with intense notes of jasmine, orange blossom, lime peel, peach and Muscat grape. The roundness of the mouth feel with good volume and fullness while refreshing acidity. The finish brings back all of those amazing floral characteristics that were on the nose along with a great expression of minerality.

$19.99 per bottle

2016 Lapostolle Grande Selection Chardonnay, Chile

This aromatic chardonnay is created by pulling grapes from a region that has mild temperatures all year around which lends to a slow ripening process. The winemaking also plays a key role in the flavor profile, 80% of the juice sees stainless steel aging and the remaining 20% is fermented in French oak barrels. The nose has a profile of pineapple, green apple and lemongrass. The palate has refreshing acidity, a slight creamy texture from the little bit of oak with a touch of minerality adding a complex long finish.

$12.99 per bottle

2016 Matetic Corralillo Organic Pinot Noir San Antonio Valley, Chile

This Certified Organic Producer has created a wonderful Pinot that has beautiful aromas of red fruit such as strawberries and raspberries with hints of blueberry and subtle spice notes. The palate is rich and flavorful with soft tannins vibrant acidity and a long juicy finish. It sees French oak for 11 months.

$23.99 per bottle

2015 Falernia Carmenere Reserva, Elqui Valley, Chile

Attention Big Red Wine lovers! This Carmenere, from the high altitude Elqui Valley in northern Chile, is a big powerful wine at an unbelievable price. Made from 60% over-ripe and partially dried grapes like the rich and fruity $60-$90 Amarone from the Veneto region of Italy, this beauty shows that same big delicious sweet fruit quality.  60% of the wine  sees 8 months in new American oak. At 15% alcohol, it packs a punch to go with its oh-so-smooth lip-smacking fruit. A huge hit at a recent tasting, this wine over-delivers.

$12.99 per bottle

2016 Leyda Sauvignon Blanc, Layda Valley, Chile

This wine has a great expression of mineralogy and amazing pronounced aromatic intensity with a wide array of aromas such as herbal notes, citrus notes such as grapefruit and mandarin, and tropical notes of guava and passion fruit. In the mouth a sharp crisp acidity that is refreshing, citric and juicy.

$7.99 per bottle
