We have something for the Rombauer lover in your life and some really fun picks from amazing winemakers of Oregon who will blow your mind with a version of chardonnay you have probably never tried. Here are a list of some of the store favorites from the year along with some personal choices that every wine lover would enjoy!
There is an overall sense of freshness and tension with a luscious fruit core. Fresh Meyer lemon custard, white flower, lemon verbena, and stony notes evolve along with some beeswax and marzipan accents. The wine is rich and persistent while remaining taut with salinity.
Aromas of preserved lemon, straw, honey, and citrus blossom. Golden delicious apple, pear, pineapple, ginger and saline.
Styled in the manner of the great wines of Burgundy, the La Hermana is the chiseled and more fruit-driven “sister” to the White Hill Chardonnay. The fruit is sourced from the Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills vineyards of Santa Maria Valley. The wine was barrel fermented for ten months in 100% neutral oak.
The Willamette Valley bottling from Morgen Long is a representational blend of the cellar. After one year in French oak the wines were racked to stainless steel. The final blend has 20% new French oak then racked off the lees and sulfured. The wines were sabilized and filtered after 18 months. This wine has elegantly flinty reduction with lemon curd and lime oil, and thread of almond extract mixed with graham cracker and ginger. Faint wood spice and subtle minerality with lively acidity and flavors are smooth by silken texture and ample density, stretching out long on the finish.
The 2018 Seven Springs Chardonnay shows wonderful intensity and concentration indicative of a sunny and dry vintage. The aromatics straddle the line between richness and brightness and the palate begins with a generous texture and closes with a powerful, lengthy finish.
Classically beautiful, the 2019 vintage opens with aromas of honeysuckle, white peach blossom and citrus zest, along with soft accents of vanilla. Silky stone fruit, lemon curd and honeydew flavors flow across the round, full palate, with lightly toasted oak, cool minerality and a lingering citrus note adding texture and depth. This quintessential expression of cool-climate Carneros chardonnay offers concentrated flavors of creamy golden apple, ripe peach and baking spice, supported by pitch-perfect acidity.
Barrel fermented with complete malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged on its lees for ten months in 50% new Burgundy barrels. This barrel regimen gives the wine weight. Apple blossom and honeysuckle aromas are the high notes with enticing mineral flavors forming the basis.
The abundant citrus on the nose persists on the palate as you are greeted within invigorating notes of freshly squeezed lemon juice, jasmine green tea and spicy wasabi arugula. This all comes together seamlessly on a silky palate with delicate undertones of crème fraîche and Marzipan.
Think olive oil cake, lemon zest, & sea salt.
The one acre of Wente Clone Chardonnay yielded 3 tons and was picked on the 27th of August. The grapes were foot crushed and soaked on the skins overnight before being whole bunch pressed the next morning. The juice was collected and barreled down to ferment with native yeast in neutral oak barrels. The fermentation was encouraged to keep warm by soaking in the sun throughout the duration of the fermentation before going dry. The wine aged on it's lees for 9 months before being racked for the first time to bottle, unfined & unfiltered.
A nose of lemon peel, slate, and minerals with a smooth palate of a fine suede and pear skin and a lengthy finish.
Produced from a variety of Eola-Amity Hills vineyards including Seven Springs, Von Oehsen, Anahata, and just south of the Eola-Amity Hills in the south Salem Hills Open Claim, the VGW "Very Good White" is the annual 100% Willamette Valley Chardonnay blend that is the entry into the world of 00 Wines Chardonnay.
Aromas of Meyer Lemon, river rock, vanilla bean, and honey suckle highlight the nose. On the palate the wine strikes brightness richness and balance. Mouth watering acidity and flinty minerality leads into flavors of lemon curd, almond and passion fruit.
Chardonnay with lovely weighted base tones, tones of sun kissed orchard fruit and a sublime rich nature that is consistently threaded with and supported by an energetic acid core.
This wine produces aromas of flint fused with lime oils, lemon curd, stone fruit, a hint of wood spice that comes off almost as a ginger quality and it finishes with a hint of baked pie crust. The palate is full of lively acidity and is densely layered with threads of texture creating movement without being flabby. The lingering finish leaves you wanting more and more.
2018 Sisters Chardonnay is named for Larry’s mom and her sister who managed to stay together and take care of each other for nearly 90 years. This wine comes from the best lots of the vintage. Shallow rocky soils driver mineral, savory fruit and floral qualities. This whole cluster pressed wine is fermented in barrel with wild yeasts 16% new 600 liter puncheons, 55% neutral French Oak barriques and went through full malolactic in barrel. With 10 months of aging in the barrel it is transferred to tank 6 for 6 months prior to bottling.
