The La Bohéme vineyard was planted in 1985 by taking from the estates best original Pommard plantings. All of Elk Coves wines go through the same gravity flow system and after they ferment in stainless steel it is aged for 10 months in 29% new French oak. The winemaking team picks the best barrels from what was barreled and creates the La Bohéme bottling. Elegant and pure it opens with candied black cherry and cedar that lead into dusty wafts of briar patch. Warm cinnamon, clove and violets on the finish combined with a lush tannic structure that doesn’t quit.

Failla is one of our favorite Pinot producers here at the store and is a very popular among our customers as well. This producer stays very true to the region the wine is grown in a tends to have minimal intervention on the wine. This is a great example; they used 50% whole cluster and use no fining or filtration. Complexity on the nose and palate take you on a wild ride. I suggest opening this wine and spending a night with it; let it change throughout the evening and enjoy the ride. Bramble berries, tart raspberry, light hints of tobacco and spice and hints of black tea with soft tannins and a balanced acidity to round out the finish.

I brought this in for the shop after sitting down to a lovely lunch of pan seared wild Alaskan King Salmon with dill at Bouchon with Gary Farrell winemaker, Theresa Heredia. Theresa has restored this estate to its historic glory, in my humble opinion, and I couldn’t be more excited about what she’s doing in the cellar. Theresa explains that her philosophy involves treating each batch of fruit individually, so that her process in the cellar is always uniquely tailored to match what’s going on with the fruit: here, she expertly keeps hands off to let the elegant earthiness and rich dark cherry of the vineyard shine through. Just a bit of new French oak to properly frame the wine. This Pinot is rich, yet perfectly balanced. Classic Russian River!—Randy

This wine comes from the mind of the Mondavi sons and the amazing Fort Ross-Seaview Vineyard. I was actually floored with how much I enjoyed this wine; it has an amazing pureness and elegance. It opens with sweet wild raspberry, orange pith and rose petals combined to fill the glass with sweet resin and costal moss, green tea, wet rock, and candied orange. The finish is persistent and fades to notes of raspberry and dried herbs. 80% whole cluster aged in 10% new but mostly used French oak barrels with no fining or filtration.
