This impressive Cabernet-dominant estate-grown red blend from Washington State delivers loads of fruit while still offering a brightness seldom seen in wines at this price.
Kiona Vineyards got its start in the 1960’s when John Williams and Jim Holmes met at their engineering firm where they shared a mutual appreciation for wine and made the bold decision to plant a vineyard on desert land outside of their town. 1975 they planted their first grapes on Red mountain; Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay. It wasn’t until 1980 when the first wine was produced under the Kiona label.
Red Mountain and its unique terroir and climate make it a great grape growing region. Red Mountain gets 17 hours of sunlight a day, which is very uncommon for the Pacific Northwest region. Red Mountain also receives less than 6 inches of rain a year which allows grape growers to regulate how much water the crop gets through irrigation. The dramatic shifts in temperature between days and nights during growing season also lends to the flavor profile, leaving the grapes with high acidity and sugars. The Columbia Valley vineyards bring acid and fruit to the wine while the Red Mountain fruit brings a depth, structure and color to the wine.
This Cabernet-dominant blend (83%) is from all Kiona Estate vineyards. This wine also has 8% Syrah, 6% Merlot, 3% Sangiovese. The nose is full of beautiful red and black fruits with herbal back notes while the floral component draws your lips to the glass. At first taste, the unmistakable Cabernet is full of lively fruit and wonderful structure driving it down the palate. The Syrah brings a tannic spicy bite, while the Merlot and Sangiovese bring a light fruit finish that soften out the tannins of the Syrah and Cabernet. This wine really did find a beautiful balance between the Red Mountain structure and the fruit and acidity of the Columbia Valley.
