Spanish Whites for Warm Summer Nights

More Wine Enthusiasts are Discovering these Refreshing, Quality Bargains

Spain is well known for producing excellent red wines but many people are surprised to learn that Spain also produces a large amount of zippy, refreshing and affordable white wines that are perfect for summer sipping.  Modern Spanish white wines are clean and fresh and come in many styles to please most white wine lovers.

Here are some best bets to try this summer:

2018 Paco & Lola Albariño, Rias Baixas

(July's Wine of the Month)

It’s always exciting to find a lip smacking, delicious wine that not only grabs your attention on the palate but also grabs your attention with its beautiful packaging!   Paco & Lola’s Albariño has all the great qualities of classic Albariño with intense citrus flower aromatics and zesty flavors of citrus and stone fruits.  It’s clean, textured and refreshing with hints of tropical fruits rounding out the palate and adding complexity.   Paco & Lola is a modern winery in the Riax Baixas region and recognized for their fun polka dot labels.   They use state of the art technology to keep their wines focused, fresh and expressive.  The grapes for this wine come from their best vineyards in the Salnés subregion which is considered the cradle of Albariño.  Albariño is Spain’s most popular white wine and is known for being amazingly versatile and able to pair with a wide variety of foods.  The classic pairing is seafood, but Albariño easily pairs well with white meats and even spicy foods.

2017 Javier Sanz ‘Rey Santo’ Verdejo, Rueda

Verdejo is an affordable and refreshing white wine produced in the high plateau region of Castilla y Leon in northwestern Spain.  The best Verdejo wines come from the specific region of Rueda and will be labeled as such. .  Verdejo is an intensely aromatic wine with fruity, herbal qualities similar to sauvignon blanc.  The best offer crisp, bright citrus and melon characteristics with flavors that linger on the palate for a long time.  The Verdejo grape has been grown in the Rueda region for hundreds of years but almost went extinct in the mid 1900’s when growers were encouraged to plant international varietals like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.  Luckily a few producers kept some of the vines and now the wine has made a strong comeback.

2018 Ostatu Blanco, Rioja

Ostatu’s crisp, dry white is a store favorite year after year and their 2018 release is truly exceptional.  This refreshing white strikes the perfect balance between fruit, minerality and acidity.  The wine is generous yet focused with citrus and white fruits while herbal undertones add character.  Ostatu’s Blanco is made from 85% Viura and 15% Malvasia.   Bodegas Ostatu is a family owned winery and harvests grapes for this wine from 60 year old vines that are farmed with minimal treatment.

$15.99 per bottle

2018 Txomin Etxaniz Getariako Txakolina, Basque Country

Txakolina is a lightly fizzy, super crisp, unique white wine from Basque Country.  Txomin Etxaniz is one of the oldest Getaria Tkakoli producers dating back to 1649 and is the standard that all Txakolina producers try to meet.  Their Txakoli is classic in style with refreshing, zesty lemon and lime citrus and a slight saltiness, but it is also slightly richer and more elegant than other less expensive txakoli wines.  An exceptional wine!

$21.99 per bottle

2017 Pago de los Capellanes ‘O Luar do Sil’ Godello, Valdeorras

One of my favorite Ribera del Duero producers, Pago de los Capellanes, started a 2nd winery in Valdeorras to specialize in white wines from the Godello grape and their wines never disappoint me.  This is a medium bodied slightly rich white with explosive fruit flavors and citrus flower aromatics.  It’s creamy and elegant on the palate with a long persistent finish.   An amazing value at this price.

$18.99 per bottle

2017 Néboa Albariño, Rias Baixas

Neboa’s Albarino is a great summer sipper and made for warm summer nights when you want something crisp and light to quench your thirst. This white is zippy with acidity and minerality and just the right amount of citrus fruits that linger on the palate and leave you begging for another sip.

$14.99 per bottle

2018 Avinyo ‘Vi d'Agulla’ Petillant Blanc, Penedes

This lovely lightly sparkling white wine is the quintessential aperitif wine.  Avinyo is a Cava producer in the Penedes region of Catalan and they also produce this dry and lightly sparkling "Vi d'Agulla" which translates to "prickly wine."    The wine is clean, light and fresh and bursting with just the right amount of honeysuckle and citrus fruits to satisfy and clean the palate.   This wine goes down dangerously easy but at only 10.5% abv you can relax and keep sipping away.

$15.99 per bottle

2017 Quinta de Couselo ‘Turonia’ Albariño, Rias Baixas

This Turonia Albariño is a sophisticated, elegant version of Spain’s bold white wine.  It offers the classic floral and stone fruit aromas of Albariño but is slightly more weighty with bold white and tropical fruits on the palate and a long and satisfying finish. Bright acidity and minerality add to the mouth watering complexity of this delicious wine. Quinta de Couselo was once an ancient monastery and farm back in the 1100’s.  The farm is now owned by the Grandes Pagos Gallegos de Viticultura Tradicional which is a group of Spanish winemakers who focus on growing traditional Spanish varietals at the best sites and small estates around Spain.

$18.99 per bottle

2017 Xaviar Clua ‘Il-Lusio’ Garnacha Blanca, Terra Alta

Clua’s Il-Lusio is an elegant, poised, dry white wine made from 100% old vine Garnacha Blanca (White Grenache).   Medium to full bodied with enticing aromas of white flowers, almonds and apricots, the wine is similar on the palate with vibrant acidity, intriguing minerality and great length. Pair with seafood, light chicken and pork dishes, vegetable casseroles.
