The Art of Oeno--Natural Wines from Sonoma's Russian River Valley

Wine importer Amy Atwood's Natural Wine project enlists growers from the heart of America's prestige Pinot Noir and Chardonnay country, making affordable, unadulterated wines of distinction.

Oeno (ee-no) is the Greek word for wine and we know that when the Greek people started making wine, it was a very natural process.

You can tell Amy Atwood is passionate about natural wines when looking at the options in her distribution book Amy Atwood Selections.  She demonstrates this passion by working with Sonoma County winemakers who share her love for natural wines enlisting them to make her Oeno wines.  All products under the label are made to her specifications in Sebastopol, CA with grapes coming from select vineyards around Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Carneros to name just a few.

I recently brought in three wines from the Oeno line, all coming from the Russian River Valley, all under $20 a bottle, allowing those who are passionate about natural wines to fall in love.   For those who are interested in trying our natural wines, you can find the Oeno wine that clicks for you without having to spend a bundle.

NV Oeno Skin Contact Orange Wine, Russian River Valley

Floral up front with hints of vanilla and cherry. The floral-ness is replaced with drier tannic characteristics that allow some subtle spice flavors to shine. Trying to pinpoint comparable wines to Orange wines can be tricky. And even though this is 93% Chardonnay (with 14 days skin contact), and just 7% Pinot Noir, the fruit from the Pinot comes out boldly and the creaminess of the Chardonnay adds richness, it reminds me of a Pinot Noir which has been aged in new oak.

$18.99 per bottle

2019 Oeno Cabernet Sauvignon, Russian River Valley

Bright notes of cherry with a bit of tartness the reminds me of cranberries.  Tannins on the middle palate gives the wine good structure but also adds a leathery depth to it.  Dark cherry notes come out on the finish resulting in a juicy ending.

$18.99 per bottle

2019 Oeno Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Bold and balanced is how I would describe this wine.  Dark cherry and pluot fruit create a richness that makes this a juicy up front.  The addition of mild tannins dries up the palate, but it creates almost a creamy mouthfeel.  The rich fruit and tannins play with each other so well it makes it a very smooth and easy drinking wine.

$18.99 per bottle
