The Wine Country Welcomes Two Exceptional California Vintners in June

Bruce & Barbara Neyers of Napa Valley's Neyers Vineyards Take Center Stage Friday June 15, and Nick Goldschmidt of Sonoma's Goldschmidt Vineyards Returns to The Wine Country Friday June 22.

We are so excited here at The Wine Country to have not one, but two amazing wine industry veterans joining us in person during the month of June.  Both of them are favorites of our customers and I'm thrilled for the opportunity to share some of their new wines we have brought into the store for our upcoming tasting events.

Neyers Vineyards

First up is Bruce and Barbara Neyers on Friday June 15th.  Bruce's career in wine has spanned nearly fifty years, most notably as sales manager of Joseph Phelps winery for nearly two decades, and shifting to national sales manager for Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant for the past quarter century.

Concurrently, the Neyers Vineyard brand started in 1999 when Bruce and Barbara Neyers purchased a winery on a thirty acre parcel in the Sage Canyon area of Napa Valley but that came as the reward of many years of hard work in the wine industry.

Any aspiring vineyard owner and winemaker should know that Bruce Neyers stated that his first job in the industry had him hoeing weeds in the vineyard, but with hard work and determination, many important things were to follow.  Bob Travers, owner of Mayacamas winery, saw his potential while meeting him at a wine importing company in San Francisco and hired him as his cellarmaster while he was twenty-five.

Youth and aspiration found him spending a year in Germany as an apprentice winemaker, and then Joseph Phelps Vineyards for seventeen years where with mentorship from Joe Phelps he quickly rose as his assistant to eventually President and General Manager.

Today he divides his time between his busy winery and being the national sales manager for the highly influential Kermit Lynch wine importer where Kermit likes to remind him that he nearly purchases as much wine from him as the entire state of Iowa.

2015 Neyers Vineyards Sage Canyon, California Red Wine

Bruce Neyers has been at this game a long time up in Napa, and I’ve come to trust everything he puts out. When I tasted this Rhone style blend (45% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah), I was immediately salivating for something yummy off the grill: dense and chewy, with dark fruits (black plum, blackberry, blackcurrant) and savory meat, leather, smoke fill the nose and the palate. Supporting spice notes and a dollop of licorice balance things out. This is a powerful and full bodied masculine effort that complements smoked, grilled meats, and anything else that gets cooked by an open fire.

$22.99 per bottle

Goldschmidt Vineyards

New Zealand native Nick Goldschmidt will be at the store Friday June 22nd.  Nick is a multitalented winemaker who is just as knowledgeable in the vineyards as in the cellar with intense studies in viticulture and oenology at Adelaide University in South Australia.

With a range of winemaking experiences stretching from Australia, New Zealand, South America and California where Nick managed winemaking for iconic brands such as Clos du Bois, Buena Vista and Gary Farrell.

In 1998 Nick and his wife Yolyn started their own  Goldschmidt Vineyards label to showcase single vineyard sites in the Alexander Valley and Napa Valley Oakville areas and highlight their quality fruit into premium wines. Nick is often joined in the vineyard by his five children where he passes down his years of knowledge and experience so maybe we might see them as winemakers themselves one day. Intense flavor and richness balanced by quality, freshness and sense of place is what you should expect when you buy a bottle with the Goldschmidt label. Of course though we already know that here at The Wine Country with the amazing selection of his wines that we carry.  We hope to see an amazing turnout to support these industry titans.

2015 Goldshmidt "Hilary" Cabernet Sauvignon Charming Creek, Oakville, Napa Valley

This is an amazing price for such pedigree! One of our favorite winemakers, Nick Goldschmidt, crafts a superb expression of Cabernet from his prime vineyard site in the heart of Oakville. This wine was featured recently at The Taste of Oakville and blew the crowd away. Dark rich black cherry, cedar, a hint of peppercorn with a smooth, long finish filled with smoky leather notes and black currant. This is the perfect match for steak au poivre.

$32.99 per bottle

JUNE 22, FRIDAY EVENING 7:30 p.m.   $50
