In the meantime, you can enjoy sipping some marvelous wines from Antonio's portfolio.

On February 17th we’re very excited to welcome two live Spaniards to our store to share their artisan Spanish wines and foods at our Saturday afternoon tasting.

Antonio Martinez, owner of Antalva Imports will be in store to share ten high quality wines he imports from boutique producers all over Spain and Mari Carmen of La Espanola Meats, our favorite local importer and producer of authentic Spanish foods, will be serving a large selection of their specialty meats, cheeses and foods.

All for only $20 per person.  1pm-4pm at The Wine Country in Signal Hill. No reservation needed.

Here are the wines that Antonio will be pouring and that are available in store now:

Red Wines

2012 Pago de los Capellanes ‘Crianza’, Ribera del Duero

The relatively new Pago de los Capellanes winery is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region on land that in the 14th century was donated to the church as thank you for their religious services.  This medium bodied Tempranillo offers brick red color in the glass and aromas of ripe berry fruits. The palate is balanced and fresh with flavors of blackberry compote and plum jam with hints of vanilla and coffee. The oak is prevalent but subtle and the finish is long and spicy. Enjoy this wine now and buy a few bottles to open over the next three to five years.

$31.99 per bottle

2016 Pago de los Capellanes ‘Joven’, Ribera del Duero

This is Pago de los Capellanes joven or young wine and sees the shortest time in French oak. This  100% Tempranillo wine is medium bodied but  bold and packed with ripe berry and cherry fruits on both the nose and palate.  This is an elegant, easy drinking and satisfying wine that is sure to please any crowd.

$18.99 per bottle

2015 Bodegas Merayo Mencia, Bierzo

Mencia is a grape grown in Northwestern Spain in the regions of Bierzo,  Ribeiro Sacra and Valdeorras that has caught the attention of wine enthusiasts, especially with wines produced from old vine Mencia grapes. Bodegas Merayo has been growing grapes for generations and the average age of their Mencia vines are 60 years old.  This entry level Mencia sees no oak treatment so the beauty of the old vine fruit really shines.  It has the characteristic berry and floral aromatics and the medium bodied wine is vibrant with dark black cherry and berry fruits.  It’s fresh and smooth and immensely satisfying.

$11.99 per bottle

2012 Altolandon ‘Rayuelo’ Bobal, Manchuela

Bobal is one of Spain’s most planted varietals that most people have never heard of.  Grown in the higher elevation plateau regions inland from Valencia, Bobal produces bold, dark wines with plenty of tannins and acidity. Altolandon’s Rayuelo has plenty of pretty ripe fruit, great tannic structure and some nice earthy undertones.  Pair this wine with a juicy grilled steak or barbecued lamb.

$18.99 per bottle

2015 Coto de Hayas ‘Centenaria’ Old Vine Garnacha, Campo de Borja

Centenaria is a 100% Grenache wine produced from 100 year old vines in the Campo de Borja wine region of Zaragoza.   This wine is a great example of the incredible values you can get from Spanish wines as it delivers a lot of wine for the price.  The medium bodied wine is packed full of red and blue berry fruits with notes of balsamic and spice. It’s fresh, smooth and satisfying.

$14.99 per bottle

2015 Autocton Celler ‘Vi Negre’ Sumoll, Penedes

Sumoll is an ancient grape found in the Catalan region of North Eastern Spain that has almost gone extinct and typically only used as a blending grape in Rosado and Cava wines. Sumol produces juice that is bright and fresh yet rustic with peppery and earthy undertones.  Vi Negre is produced from 50 to 80 year old vines and is a blend of 80% Sumoll with the addition of 20% Tempranillo for some depth and balance.

$18.99 per bottle

White Wines

2016 Antxiola Txakolina, Getaria, Basque Country

Txakolina is a super crisp, slightly effervescent, easy drinking and refreshing white wine served in restaurants all over Basque country in Northern Spain.  It has the classic tart flavors of lemon and lime with a touch of minerally saltiness. The grapes for Txakolina are grown on the steep and breezy hillsides overlooking the Atlantic coast and kept ice cold during harvest and vinification in order to lock in carbon dioxide which gives the wine its natural sprtiziness. This is a great wine as an aperitif or with seafood and super satisfying on a hot summer day.

$16.99 per bottle

2016 Quinta de Couselo ‘Turonia’ Albariño, Rias Baixas

This Turonia Albariño is a sophisticated, elegant version of Spain’s bold white wine.  It offers the classic floral and stone fruit aromas of Albariño but its slight more weighty with bold white and tropical fruits on the palate and a long and satisfying finish. Bright acidity and minerality add to the mouth watering complexity of this delicious wine. Quinta de Couselo was once an ancient monastery and farm back in the 1100’s.  The farm is now owned by the Grandes Pagos Gallegos de Viticultura Tradicional which is a group of Spanish winemakers who focus on growing traditional Spanish varietals at the best sites and small estates around Spain.

$18.99 per bottle

2016 Pago de los Capellanes ‘O Luar do Sil’ Godello, Valdeorras

One of my favorite Ribera del Duero producers, Pago de los Capellanes, started a 2nd winery in Valdeorras to specialize in white wines from the Godello grape and their wines never disappoint me.  This is a medium to full bodied rich white with explosive fruit flavors and citrus flower aromatics.  It’s creamy and elegant with a long persistent finish.   An amazing value at this price.

$18.99 per bottle

2016 Bodega Penha ‘Maria Andrea’ Blanco, Ribeiro

Maria Andrea is a stunning white blend of Treixadura, Loureira and Albariño from the Galicia region of Spain where some of Spain’s best dry white wines are produced.  This highly aromatic dry white is elegantly layered with flavors of stone and citrus fruits with classic tingling minerality and a long persistent finish.

$18.99 per bottle
