Ontañon is a 5th generation family of growers in Rioja but always sold their fruit until the 1970’s when Cuevas Perez inherited the vineyards and started bottling their own wine. Their vineyards are located in the warmer Rioja Baja region but at high elevation so the wines retain their freshness and floral aromatics. They only release their Reserva wines in years with the very best conditions for producing their most ageworthy wines and 2005 was an exceptional year. The bright red cherry fruit still shines in this wine despite its 10+ years of age. It’s a smooth, well balanced wine yet fresh and complex with hints of spice, vanilla and toasted oak.
