The first vintage of this wine - 1997 - was chosen over 1st growth Bordeaux and other top-notch red wines by international wine experts in multiple blind tastings, putting this rich, opulent, smooth, complex and very, very special wine on the international map. The flagship wine of the 115-year-old family-owned Catena wine empire, it’s made from hand selected grapes from individual old vines and rows from different locations and altitudes (from 3,000' to 5,000') and at different ripeness levels. The blend is different every year and the 2009 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Malbec. The over 200 individual selections are separately micro-vinified, then aged 24 months in the finest French oak barrels and finally meticulously blended. The resultant wine is a revelation - it blew me away – the pedigree shows from the start and follows throughout. The intense, pretty, ripe, savory but balanced aromas of black fruits, thyme, rocky minerality, lavender and black olive captivate and you quickly realize exactly how special this wine is. The magnificently complex and powerful palate is quite fresh, with smooth, intense, fruit of exceptional depth and focus. Dark fruits, soy, minerality and a hint of flowers smoothly coat the palate and lead to a long, smooth and somewhat hedonistic finish, with wonderfully refined tannins from that incredible Lafite oak and vibrant but softening acidity. This 2009 has been released along with the 2010 and 2011 at a special price - usually $99.99 - now $79.99 - and in a special vertical three pak in a wooden case with a glossy brochure (on which we're offering an additional discount vs the individual bottle price - $219.99).
