The Cru of Julienas in Beaujolais was rumored to be a favorite of the Romans, legend is that the name Julienas was given as a nod to Julius Caesar. While not quite as far back as that the Perrachon family have been farmers in Julienas since 1601, though actual bottling of their Gamay did not begin until 1877. The farming is done organically though they resist being certified, opting to keep a chemical option available in the case of life or death to a vine. The Gamay here comes from mostly 55 year old vines grown in soils rich with blue stones and granite. This generous and quaffable Beaujolais is vibrating with juicy and joyful fruit, a flower garden and cracked pepper. Dense but hardly heavy this is one of those wines you can pop the cork on and wash down any number of dishes with, or just when you want a delicious and refreshing red to quench your thirst.
