I was dropped a sample of this wine on a day I was too busy to get to it, so I took it home, and after whipping up a big plate of fresh pesto-dressed pasta, I popped the cork. I was instantly spellbound, and for anything to take my attention away from my homemade pesto after a long day at work, well, that’s a wine to investigate further.
We are very familiar with the Haut-Bourg winery. We’ve been stocking their racy Muscadet for about a decade, and their rosé freaking blew us away last vintage, (and yes, I am currently awaiting a sample of the 2020 from them, so keep an eye out), so I expected the wine to be good at the very least, but this good?
This wine is way, way better than good; this is exceptional. Exploding with exotic fruit and blooming white flowers on the nose. On the palate, the wine is expansive and mouth-filling, with more tropical notes along with lychee and grapefruit. Nothing green here, though you get the signature Sauvignon Blanc lift of fresh citrus on the long, long finish. Cannot get over how much wine there is here for this price.—Samantha Dugan
