September Wine of the Month!!
We’ve had quite the good luck as of late finding luscious, fun reds to feature in our Wine of the Month program and while we prefer to shake things up a little and offer delicious white wines as well, sometimes we must go where the aligned stars are leading us.
It was a late March afternoon when we got a visit from a beaming young Vincent Gardies, the next generation winemaker at Domaine Gardies, a winery located in Southern France’s Cotes du Roussillon. He bore a very proud grin as he poured me a deep splash of vibrant, dark purple-red wine. There was something in both the depth of color, and that undoubtedly confident smile that let me know I was likely in store for a treat. “This wine is not here in California yet but I’d like to see what it is you think of it” Vincent said as he rested the bottle on the tasting table in a manner that reminded me of a card shark turning over his cards and showing a full house. The second I brought the glass to my nose I was swept away in a tornado of nervy, assertive black fruit, dried herbs, sunbaked stones, licorice and violets. Took all that I had to pull my nose from the intoxication of aromatics but the watering of my mouth, well it demanded I take a sip. Took but two of those before we begged for 20 cases to be special ordered for our Summer Wine of the Month program.
All organically farmed and made from 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and the remainder being rounded out with Carignan and Mourvedre. This is a wine that will be best of friends with anything meaty off the grill, including hearty and earthy mushrooms, but has such generosity it drinks beautifully on its own. Soft tannin, plump but fresh. A seriously lovely addition to our summer of brilliant red bends!
