This flagship bottling of Chateau Lafite Rothschild’s Chilean project is nothing less than a seriously structured, world class wine on every level. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carménère and 5% Syrah, the grapes are hand-picked from up to 80-year-old, pre-phylloxera, un-grafted rootstock vines and hand sorted. After careful fermentation using the same techniques and expertise as employed at their world-famous Bordeaux domaine, the wine is aged for 18 months in exactly the same barrels as their flagship first growth Bordeaux. This is one of the main reasons why this wine has an unmistakable elegance and grace - and serious aging potential. The aromas are ripe and intense - prunes, cherries, and ripe raspberries followed by notes of tobacco, leather, graphite. The dark, earthy, fruit is supple and strong, with very good intensity, a pleasant earthy spiciness and an overlay of that Lafite best-in-the-world oak. It is all quite fresh, with perfect natural acidity. And the tannins are fine, firm and round at the same time - a magical combination of the top-notch fruit, winemaking and cooperage. Made for the cellar, this wine needs a vigorous decant if you’re planning on drinking it now. And at less than one-tenth the price of its first growth Bordeaux big brother, a remarkable bargain and a more than discerning gift.
