Brooding and pungent, and will benefit with some air. Complex aromas of fresh cranberries, sandalwood and rose hips, plus a granitic minerality (even tough grown on limestone). Rich but not overripe, the structured, savory, and subtle herbal nature of the variety and its fresh acidity make this wine versatile for the table. Pair with game, roasted or grilled red meats or foul.

As legend has it, in 1552 about two thousand Magyar (Hungarian) soldiers protected the walled city of Eger from nearly a hundred thousand Turkish invaders during a month long siege. Awestruck by the strength and ferocity of the Hungarian defenders, the Turks became convinced that the wine that dripped down the beards and armor of these relentless Magyars had been mixed with bull’s blood, giving them super human strength. The fled, very afraid, thereby sparing the city. From that point on, Egri Bikavér or “Bulls Blood” as the red wines from Eger came to be known, defined this region. Currently and officially, Egri Bikavér is a blend - like Chateauneuf de Pape - with up to 13 possible grapes. However, unlike CDP, Kékfrankos is the foundation.

Master Sommelier and Hungarian born, János Szabo was looking for a collaborator and partner with the right vines and talent to produce a 100% Kékfrankos wine. He found his answer in physician and vigneron Dr.
János Stumpf. Stumpf, himself a disciple of Tibor Gál, a local hero and internationally known winemaker of the legendary SuperTuscan Ornalia, had both qualities. Gál unfortunately died in a car wreck in 2004, but he believed in Eger’s potential. Their partnership has resulted in the revival of one of Hungary’s greatest red wines. Grapes are grown on soils from ancient dormant volcanoes with limestone, rhyolite and tufa (volcanic sediments).
