Barbera that is Quite the Bang for the Buck!
Barbera is one of Italy’s greatest food wines with its robust fruit flavors, soft tannins and bright tones. It’s affordable, crowd pleasing and the perfect match for most foods we eat on a daily basis like pasta, pizza, chicken, soups and burgers. Barbera is grown all over Italy but its birthplace is in the Piedmont region of northern Italy where there are mentions of the grape dating back to the 13th century. Barbera is the everyday wine found on Piemontese tables and is often referred to as “the people’s wine.”
Bonfante’s 2017 Barbera d’Asti is a great discovery and really over delivers at this price. Just seeing the beautiful dark purple red wine in the glass will get your mouth watering for a taste and then that’s when the wine really packs a punch. This Barbera is dense with ripe currants, blackberries and dark red fruits but the grape's natural acidity keeps the wine light on the palate with freshness and vibrancy. A short aging in used oak barrels adds a little tannic structure and hints of spice to help balance the ripe fruit from a warm vintage.
The Bonfante family has been making wine in the Asti province of Piedmont for 8 generations and siblings Marco and Micaela started the Marco Bonfante winery in 2000 when their father died and his winery was divided.
