If there is a more complete unoaked Chardonnay from California, we've yet to discover it.
For many vintages, we've been impressed with the depth and texture of Neyers' unoaked Chardonnay. If there is a more complete unoaked Chardonnay in California, we haven't encountered it. It is named for the "304" food-grade stainless steel tanks. Grown in the coldest Chardonnay vineyard of southern Carneros, near the foggy, cold San Pablo Bay, the chardonnay ripens slowly, being the last vineyard harvested by the winery. The non-clonal Shot Wente Chardonnay bunches, grown in rocky soil, have tiny berries producing fruit with perfect balance. After fermentation, the wine undergoes only 30 to 40% malo-lactic fermentation, bringing out a floral, round texture without the buttermilky aftertaste so many high-priced oaky Chardonnays bring out. A hit at our Chardonnay Fest, it comes highly recommended. 14.1% alcohol.
