Obsidian Ridge 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Lake County
The grapes in this wine are sourced from vineyards rich in red volcanic soil and black obsidian. The high elevation here (2,640 ft) exposes the vineyard to fast cool winds and harsh direct sunlight. This has the effect of thickening the grape skins, increasing flavor and tannic structure in the wine. 16 months are spent ageing the wine in 45% new Hungarian oak from the forests in Tokaj. Obsidian Ridge actually owns their own barrel making cooperage allowing them to use high quality oak for a less expensive cost. Aromas and flavors of dusty black fruits with a slight nutty hazelnut and dried raspberry quality.
