Poderi Colla 2017 Barbera d'Alba Costa Bruna, Piedmont
Barberas d' Alba tend to be a little more rustic than Barberas d'Asti, but no less delicious and perfect with a range of dishes. Poderi Colla grapes for this wine are grown on their 13-hectare Tenuta Rengalia estate just south of the town of Barbaresco. A portion of the vineyard was replanted in 1995, but the remaining are old vines planted in 1930 yielding superlative grapes. All grapes are hand harvested and placed in special small baskets to avoid crushing. Grapes are fermented then macerated for an additional 10-12 days. The wine matures for additional 10 - 12 months in partially new Slavonian and French oak casks before a light fining and bottling.
A classy and authentic Barbera with a hint of rusticity. Complex aromas and flavors of black cherries, licorice/fennel, cocoa powder and savory meat sauce. The palate is textured with a long finish. Pair with pastas with meat sauces, hearty stews, and red meats.
