The Southern Right label was founded by Anthony Hamilton Russell in 1994 with the goal to produce age-worthy Pinotage that is classic in style and refinement. They produce the wine on the Hamilton Russell property . Their first vintage was bottled in 2009. The Southern Right name comes from the Southern Rights Whales that frequent the cool South Atlantic Walker Bay two miles from the vineyards. Each bottle sold of the Southern Right wines a contribution is made to the conservation of these whales.
