A co-fermented wine with 2% Viognier added to the Shiraz, this is a fragrant and complex Shiraz that reflects the rocky shale soils from the cooler climate Eden Valley region. Over 160 years old, Yalumba is Australia's oldest family owned winery and they are rightfully proud of this truly hand produced wine. After fermentation, the wine spends 20 months in French and Hungarian oak of different ages, with 24% being new. The aromas are strong and memorable - cherry and blackcurrant, spices and lavender with a hint of white pepper. There is plenty of dark cherry and anise in the fruit flavors, which are strong and persistent. The cool climate natural acidity is present, providing a juicy quality. The tannins are chalky and fine, which the Eden Valley is famous for. This wine is reminiscent of the Northern Rhone valley in France, where they also co-ferment Syrah and Viognier, but with that Aussie burliness that takes everything up a notch in the most delicious way. Age worthy for another five to seven years, it needs a decant to enjoy now.
