This small family run winery makes incredibly true wines, using Biodynamic farming techniques to ensure nothing but the pure expression of the earth and climate comes through in the grapes and in the bottle. They specialize in old bush vine Grenache and the High Sands is their best bottling. Coming from their very best low yielding 70 year old vines from the top of the sandy ridge in their oldest vineyard, the grapes for this wine are meticulously hand harvested and carefully sorted into open top fermenters. Wild yeast is used and hand plunging and racking is accomplished as needed. It spends 1 year on the lees and 22 months in used French oak barrels before the best barrels are selected and bottled. And the wine in the 135 cases produced is very, very special. The high-toned nose is brooding, deep and complex, with dark berries, currants and violets with hints of chocolate and spice. In the mouth, the wine is sensual and lithe, with an ethereal, delicate weight, intensity and power. There are earthy dark fruits wrapped with minerality and graphitic tannins. Despite the medium body, there is real power, complexity and depth in the glass. The texture is smooth and elegant; the finish long and complex. There is something remarkable going on here, presenting a rare opportunity to own and drink one of the best Grenaches of its type in the world.
