This blend of 66% Malbec, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon , 12% Ancellotta (originally from Emilo-Romagna, Italy) and 10% Caladoc (a cross between Malbec & Grenache) comes from the finest high altitude vineyards in the best part of Mendoza. This big flavorful wine is named after the winemaker's Grandfather and it is a stunningly good example of best quality winemaking. The vines are meticulously hand tended, and the grapes hand-picked. Fermentation is in concrete tanks with indigenous yeast. Always big, pure and powerful, this vintage has just a bit more sensuous texture in addition to the usual intensity, complexity and minerality to go with its jammy, earthy, beautifully balanced berry and plum fruit. There are hints of cocoa and coffee on the long, supple and smooth finish. There are fine tannins from the 12 months spent in impeccable French cooperage, but they are smooth and matched perfectly with the weight of fruit. There is also an exactly right dose of juicy acidity - these grapes were picked at optimum ripeness. Just an astonishing wine - strong and forthright yet purely elegant and classy, it is a bargain at anything under $50.
