Absolute finesse on this wine, a project between Bruno Prats from Bordeaux and the Symington family of Portugal. Aromas and flavors of ripe raspberries, cherries, peppery spice and rocky earth. Pair with lamb, roasted meats, or sausages.
Description

Chryseia is joint venture between two powerhouse estates - the Prats from Bordeaux (former owners of Chateau Cos d'Estournel) and Symington, a major wine and Port producer in Portugal. This project began in 1999 with the express purpose of elevating the commercial visibility and quality of red Douro Valley wines.

In Chryseia (means 'golden), the power of Douro fruit is modulated and finessed by Bordeaux techniques. It is a blend of 45% Touriga Nacional and 55% Touriga Franca, both of which are used in Port production and work harmoniously together. Most of the grapes are sourced from two quintas (estates) on the left bank of the Douro River - Quinta Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz. Both vineyards are extremely steep and terraced, with the highest peak 1t 1458 feet.

Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the winery practices restraint on its oak aging, using 400 liter barrels, instead of the 223-liter barrels used in Bordeaux. The wines age 15 months in these barrels.

Winemaker Notes

Chryseia 2018 was made with the finest grapes from Prats & Symington’s own Douro Valley vineyards, Quinta de Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz. Aswith all previous Chryseia wines, Quinta da Vila Velha, owned by James andRupert Symington and which neighbors Quinta de Roriz, also contributed for the blend.

Critical Acclaim

96 pts Wine Enthusiast: This wine is the result of a joint venture between Bordelais Bruno Prats and the Symington family in the Douro. It has an impressive mix of elegance, density and concentration. It's a wood-aged wine that's packed with dark plum, berry and rich tannins, which will lend well to cellaring. Drink from 2025.

Cellar Selection
93pts Wilfred Wong of Wine.com: COMMENTARY: The 2018 CHRYSEIA is a standout wine on the world stage! TASTING NOTES: This wine excels with aromas and flavors of bold, ripe fruits, hints of licorice, savory spices, earth, and oaky notes. Serve it with a well-spiced, slow-cooked lamb stew and homemade rustic bread. (Tasted: March 16, 2022, San Francisco, CA)

93 pts Wine Spectator: Ripe and alluring, with a lovely velvety feel to the mix of gently mulled plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit. A licorice snap weaves around the fruit, while a graphite note provides support on the finish. Delicious. Drink now through 2027.

93 pts James Suckling: Polished nose with aromas of plums, blueberries, cedar, chocolate and praline. It’s full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Delicious depth of fruit. Give this a couple more years. Drink from 2022.
