April's Spirit of the Month - Sangallo Amaro-Camatti Aperitivo
April’s Spirit of the Month is Sangallo Distilleria’s Amaro Camatti Aperitivo. Coming out of winter, April is always a month of longer days but also cold nights. And while I’m a fan of drinking Amaros during those cold long nights, when the nights aren’t so long, you need something a little lighter. Amaro Camatti is the type of liqueur you can enjoy in a Spirtz when the sun is out and appreciated on a rock or neat when the moon is up. This Amaro is like if Fernet and Montenegro had a baby. Sweet oranges and dark chocolate, bold cola spices and just as bold mint flavor. All combined to make a crushable, versatile Amaro.
Originally created by Umberto Briganti in 1924, Amaro Camatti uses almonds, bitter oranges, cinchona, mint and gentian to make a liqueur that has been enjoyed in Genoa and worldwide. Sangallo Distilleria delle Cinque Terre, which was founded in 1964, keeps traditional family recipes alive, including the Briganti’s Amaro Camatti. The distillery even kept the same label as what was originally made for Amaro Camatti in 1924 with just a little tightening up. While drinking it neat or in a Spirtz are two options for how to enjoy Amaro Camatti, you could also use it in a Negroni or a Boulevardier, use it as a base for a Mule cocktail, add it to a Grog or even give your Long Island Iced Tea a twist. The Century old liqueur has as many uses as it has years.
