November's Spirit of the Month - Distilleria Alpe's Amaro Alpe
November’s Spirit of the Month is Distilleria Alpe’s Amaro Alpe. This amaro is like if Fernet and Jägermeister had a baby. Gentian and anise are bolder flavors that hit you first. Delicate notes of clove add some depth, and minty flavors create a refreshing finish almost like what a peppermint does. Since it is starting to get dark earlier and colder, it just feels like it’s amaro season. Time to sit down with amaro on the rocks or a Black Manhattan and watch SNL or Sunday Night Football. And while those broadcasts might not be that popular in Hône, the town that Distilleria Alpe is in, their Amaro fits right into watching them.
Located in the northwest part of Italy in the region of Val d’Aosta, Distilleria Alpe forages for the majority of their botanicals locally. In the Amaro Alpe, there are more than 20 locally grown herbs, roots, and flowers, including gentian, genepy, and mint. The botanicals are infused for about a month in pure alcohol to ensure vibrancy of flavor. After that month, part of the infusion is redistilled to enhance the flavors even further and to clarify the color. If you’re an amaro fan, this is a fun one to add to your collection.
