Putting the Spotlight on Female Winemakers

Join us on January 30th as we spotlight Female Winemakers from around the world. In 2021 a Gallup Report poll was done that found that 49% of females questioned preferred wine over beer or spirits. That same year, a survey was done that found that only 17.8% of the Winemakers in the world are female identifying individuals. But that hasn’t always been the case, you can look back in history and find that there are times where the majority of the Winemakers/Master Brewers and Master Distillers were Women. Looking into the history of “Witches”, those cauldrons and potions are actually tools for fermenting and distilling. So, while it might be less common for there to be Female Winemakers in modern day, that has not been the case in the past.

Since Women Winemakers are a heavy minority in the Wine World, their stories aren’t shared as much as they should be. Take the story of Laura Catena for example; the 4th generation Winemaker graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in 1988 and received a Medical Doctor Degree from Standford University. She joined the family business in 1995 while also establishing The Catena Institute of Wine. Doctor Laura splits her time between San Francisco, where she is a part-time physician of Emergency Medicine and Mendoza, Argentina where she oversees the Catena Zapata winery and her own wine label, Luca. And that’s just one Woman you will be tasting wine from on the 30th, can you imagine who else and what else you’ll learn about that night?

Join us on the 30th and taste wines from Catena, Jules Taylor, Martha Stoumen, Judith Beck, Markham and more!
