SEPTEMBER'S SPIRIT OF THE MONTH: EL GRAN LEGADO DE VIDA BLANCO TEQUILA

September’s Spirit of the Month is El Gran Legado De Vida Blanco Tequila. With Blue Weber grown in Michoacan and made at NOM 1123 (Tequila Cascahuin) in Jalisco, this is the kind of Blanco you give to people who like the natural and clean flavors of a non-additive Tequila. After growing to full maturity in Michoacan, the Agave is sent to Jalisco where it goes through 24 hours (over a 3-day period) of steaming in an oven. The cooked Agave is milled to break up the pinas and then is fermented for 4-days in stainless steel. After fermentation there is a double distillation, once in a stainless-steel alembic and again in a copper alembic. The distillate comes out at 55% and is proof downed with water to 40%, the Tequila is then rested for 15-30 days in stainless steel before bottling.

The result is a Tequila with a bright pop of orange up front that leads to light notes of white pepper. Delicate stone fruit characteristics add a roundness to the finish. El Gran Legado De Vida serves as another wonderful example of why more and more people are looking for additive-free Tequilas. With the availability of such delicious flavors from just using fully matured Agave, why add fake vanilla and lab produced yeast to give the idea of taste when it can come naturally too.
