Jean Collet 2022 Sauvignon, Saint-Bris, Burgundy
In 2008 Romain Collet, then just 21 years old, was handed the winemaking and running of the family domaine after his father suffered nerve damage. Much like his father, Romain was know throughout Chablis as “the life of the party” and cherished for their generosity. Once at the helm Romain immediately began organic, and in some cases, biodynamic conversions throughout their vineyards. Saint Bris is the one area in Burgundy that you are permitted to grow Sauvignon Blanc and has always been an under-the-radar treat, mostly for us wine nerds, because you get the flavors of racy and green, like the Loire Valley, (think Sancerre) but with more weight and silk on the palate. Very chalky, limestone soils that are littered with fossilized sea creatures, the wines are brimming with nerve, tang, mouth-watering energy but softer than those you find in the Loire. Pretty amazing value here.
