Josmeyer 2018 Pinot Auxerrois "H" Vieilles Vignes, Alsace, France
This gorgeous Pinot Auxerrois is a rare treat as it comes from the famed Grand Cru vineyard Hengst, located in the village of Wintzenheim in Alsace. The thing that makes it even more rare is that this variety, Pinot Auxerrois, is not "permitted" for Grand Cru even though it is in fact from that vineyard. The majority of planted vines are Gewurztraminer, with some Pinot Gris and less than 10% Riesling. Due to the marl soils that are mixed with sandstone the wines from Hengst have ricer, fuller bodies and intense precision and this Pinot Auzerrois is exactly that. One of the most seductive wines we have in the shop. Luscious, layered with stone fruit, herbs, minerals and a kiss of honey. Round and curvy on the palate with length that goes on for hours. One of the best wines I've had from Alsace and for this price? I was able to snag one case and I am buying the first bottle.
