Domaine Chevallier Bernard 2024 Savoie Jongieux, France--February's Wine of the Month
In southeast France tucked next to the Alps and bordering Italy and Switzerland is the wild, picturesque region known as the Savoie. The skiing town of Chamonix is in the Savoie and so is the gorgeous Lake Annecy.
Famous for its Raclette and other alpine cheeses, Savoie is also a producer of vibrant, minerally white wines and lighter-bodied reds grown largely in the foothills of the Alps. Grapes like Jacquére, Altesse and Mondeuse, unfamiliar to most of us in California, are the foundational wines of the region and they are bright, fresh-tasting and very welcome.
February’s sensational Wine of the Month is the latest vintage of a brilliant Jacquère from Chavalier-Bernard grown in the Jongieux sub-region. Imagine a fresh tasting white wine that reminds you of snow melt. All the minerals are there, plus the fruit, plus the energy. All that is needed is some cheese and Hey Brother bread and your ordinary night is about to turn special. We featured this wine as a Wine of the Month three vintages ago, and here it is again, hopefully to find more devoted fans.
