Peter Mathis plants Grenache and makes Grenache. Very good Grenache. His rose is picked just for this wine--no bleeding off its red wine--and you will be hard pressed to find a more authentically Provence-styled rose in California.
Description
Peter Mathis planted Grenache in a beautiful hillside vineyard above the town of Sonoma. The vines are heirloom clones purchased from Tablas Creek, which are the same clones used by Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Unlike some others in California who bleed off red wine, Mathis picks this Grenache to make rosé, and that is what gives it such an authentically Provencal character. With a pale onion-skin color, and a Provence-inspired aroma, this is a dry rosé with enough refreshing fruit to balance. Quite impressive.
