Beeslaar "Taj" 2020 Pinotage Stellenbosch, South Africa

TAJ Pinotage is a new project from Abrie Beeslaar—the world renowned winemaker of Kanonkop and the owner/winemaker of the premier Beeslaar Pinotage. The grapes for TAJ are sourced from the largest Pinotage vineyard in the world, which is located in the Swartland of South Africa, and is made up of 20-year-old, unirrigated bushvines, planted in soils of decomposed shale. These bushvines are able to weather the harsh conditions of the Swartland, and create smaller, more concentrated berries.
There was plenty of rainfall in the Winter of 2020 and cool weather during the growing season, which produced smaller than normal berries with a lot of concentration.
The 2020 vintage was lightly oaked. It is deep ruby red in color, with pronounced plum and dark chocolate aromas. The richness of the fruit flavors is balanced by a silky, dry finish.
