Chateau de Beaucastel has achieved legendary status among lovers of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The 2023 is shaping up to be another delicious vintage.
Description

“César Perrin poured me various different samples to convey an approximate idea of what the final blend of the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape will taste like. A foudre that blends 50% Grenache with the remainder equally divided between Counoise and Cinsaut showed subtle spice, licorice and forest strawberry alongside gentle tannins. Another sample mingling Terret Noir, Muscardin and Vaccarèse presented excellent freshness, while the subsequent single-varietal Grenache snippet was totally alluring.  A Syrah portion that used 50% whole clusters during fermentation provided minty shadings, stemminess and, again, very smooth tannins.  Finally, a single-varietal Mourvèdre sample brought structure and fleshiness to the table.  All in all, readers can look forward to yet another outstanding red Beaucastel with the potential to match or even outperform the delicious 2022.”--Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

"As usual, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Château de Beaucastel was matured in foudres. Wafting from the glass with aromas of pepper, garrigue, dark berries and flowers, it’s medium- to full-bodied, round and sappy, with a layered core of fruit and a dense, precise mid-palate framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a firmer, gently spicy finish.

Château de Beaucastel has long produced some of the Southern Rhône’s most long-lived red wines. Yet beyond their capacity for graceful evolution, what distinguishes Beaucastel is a consistent thread of elegance and finesse that persists through even the most structured and concentrated vintages. Since the passing of Jacques Perrin in 1978, the estate has adhered rigorously to organic viticulture across its 110 hectares in the northern reaches of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, eschewing chemical treatments in favor of a holistic approach to farming.

His sons, François and Jean-Pierre Perrin, have remained steadfast in preserving the founding ethos: that wine must be made naturally; that Mourvèdre should anchor the blend; and that the intrinsic character of the wine must never be compromised by modern enological shortcuts. Under their stewardship, Beaucastel has remained a beacon of authenticity.

Today, the next generation, led by César Perrin, continues to build on this legacy while responding to new challenges. In the cellar, César has preserved the domaine’s traditional practices—including whole-cluster fermentations and élevage in large oak foudres—while making subtle adjustments to address the effects of a warming climate. Notably, he has increased the proportion of Counoise in the blend to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity.

The 2023s are particularly successful, combining technical precision with the identity of the vintage. Cool-toned, precise and dense without excess weight, they rank among the most compelling wines of the appellation. The broader Famille Perrin range also delivers outstanding quality across the board, confirming the family’s deep commitment to excellence well beyond the confines of Beaucastel itself."--Yohan Castaing, RobertParker.com
